Newsroom – American Airlines Education makes higher education affordable for the children of team members

In its largest ever donation, the foundation is giving out more than $1.2 million in scholarships

  • 452 students in eight countries have received scholarships from the American Airlines Education Foundation.
  • 107 of the scholarship winners are first-generation undergraduate students.

Fort Worth, Texas – The American Airlines Education Foundation is easing the cost of higher education for 452 students who support airline team members. In its largest donation to date, the Education Foundation awarded more than $1.2 million in scholarships for the 2022-2023 academic year.

Each recipient received a $2,500 scholarship, and 107 first-generation undergraduate students each received an additional award of $1,000. Scholarships fund full-time undergraduate study at any accredited college, university or professional program worldwide.

“From future medical professionals to artists, engineers, pilots and more, these students are already on the path to success and doing great things in their communities,” said Ron Defeo, US President of Communications. “Every year, we are amazed by the breadth of talent and ambition of applicants, and we are especially proud to invest in our team members and their children, who are an extension of the American Airlines family.”

Recipients of this round of scholarships live in eight countries around the world: the United States, Canada, Mexico, China, Costa Rica, and the Dominican Republic. They are dependents of team members employed by American Corporation and its wholly owned carrier Envoy, PSA and Piedmont.

Nearly 1,100 students applied for the Foundation Education Scholarship this year. Applicants are assessed through a competitive application process based on academic achievement, community service, extra-curricular activities, and financial need.

The application window for the 2023-2024 academic year will open in January. For more information on the Education Foundation Scholarship, visit aa.com/scholarships.
