Loyalty defeats Phoenix Rising Football Club 3-0 on the playoff berth

Conway, Vasyl and Cassanzo help send SD Loyal to second in a row

SAN DIEGO (September 17, 2022) – San Diego Loyal SC heads into the playoffs. The club secured its place in the USL Championship for the second year in a row with a 3-0 victory over Phoenix Rising FC on Saturday night in front of the bustling Torero Stadium.

Evan Conway, Kyle Vaselle and Jackson Cassanzo all found the back of the net in a fiery second half against his opponent from the desert. The win breaks a three-game losing streak and adds another three points to SD Loyal’s position in ranking. Team Landon Donovan (17W-9L-4D, 55 points) is still in second place behind San Antonio FC, the only other Western team to earn a place in the playoff.

A raucous, lively crowd first erupted when Conway opened the scoring in the 54th minute. The striker sent in a long cross from Tommy Mochupan near the right post, giving SD Loyal a 1-0 lead. It was Conway’s ninth goal this season.

Conway’s score was also all the SD Loyal points he needed to unleash the attack after spending the first half trying to break the deadlock. In the 64th minute, it was a defensive error Phoenix Rising FC (9W-15L-5D, 32 points) that led to SD Loyal’s second goal. Vasil gave his team a 2-0 lead when he chested a ball. The England striker put pressure on Phoenix goalkeeper Benjamin Lundt as he attempted Andrew Carlton’s shot that bounced off the crossbar. The ball slipped out of Lundt’s hand and Vasil was there to set his 13th goal of the season.

Cassanzo’s goal came after Alejandro Guido’s penalty was saved by Lundt. Cassanzo got a header from Jack Blake’s corner kick and rebounded it into the net. The third result of the night was the defender’s first as a professional, in his first start for the club. Cassanzo’s goal sealed the win and a post-season berth for SD Loyal.

Donovan’s team will now be back on the road and trying to secure a home playoff game when they visit the Las Vegas Lights on Saturday, September 24 (7 p.m.) for another game in the Western Conference.
